A New Fantasyland

After 30 years, there was a new Fantasyland with brand new attractions and new facades to greet visitors thru the castle forecourt.  But what would those guest think if the castle, the center piece of Fantasyland didn't receive some kind of face lift of its own?  For the last 30 years Sleeping Beauty Castle had been featured on the Disneyland TV show and Walt Disney Presents bathed in colorful light with bright fireworks overhead.  But for all that time the real castle at Disneyland remained a dull white color, with only the roofs showing any pigment at all.

So Sleeping Beauty Castle finally received a paint job matching those early matte paintings that had become so familiar to the audience.  The upper levels of the castle were painted in a soft pastel pink and the castle got a sprinkle of gold pixie dust and strobe lights.  Sleeping Beauty Castle would greet a whole second generation of Disneyland guests sparkling like it never did before.

The Time Castle

As part of Disneyland's 40th Anniversary in 1995, a very special time capsule was buried directly in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle.  The capsule, shaped like Sleeping Beauty Castle contained many artifacts from the first 40 years of Disneyland.  Included in the castle are: Passports dated July 17, 1995, cast member pins, media and press material from the opening of the Indiana Jones Adventure and Grad Night 95,  a laser disc containing the shows from 1995 and a 1995 cast member name tag with the name "Mickey". The Time Castle is scheduled to be reopened on July 17th, 2035.

Believe, There's Magic in the Stars!

In 2000, Disneyland celebrated it's 45th anniversary in grand style, with a new firework spectacular: "Believe, There's Magic in the Stars."  The new show utilized computer technology to create a perfectly synchronized firework display in which Sleeping Beauty Castle itself would play a part in the action.  Thanks to some high powered lights, the castle is able to change color through out the course of the show. From soft blues and greens, to bright purple and blazing red, the castle is able to reflect the attitude and emotions of the music and fireworks above.  In addition to the colorful mood changes, at key points during the display, fireworks are launched from the castle itself, surprising visitors sitting underneath the castle and creating an astonishing show-stopping moment.

Believe in Holiday Magic!

After the success of "Believe, There's Magic in the Stars" a holiday version of the show was created so guest could enjoy this marvel of the computer age at all times of the year. And once again the Castle would play a central role in the new show.  For the holiday show, a new effect was added to differentiate the holiday show from the original.  For the grand finale, guests watching the firework show from the Castle  would be amazed by a simulated snowfall, cued by a burst of bright white fireworks.

There's More to Come...
Unsubstantiated rumors speculate that Sleeping Beauty Castle will be painted gold in 2005 for Disneyland fiftieth anniversary (get it? The 50th Anniversary wedding present is gold).
