Town Square

Town Square sits at the south end of Main Street. This wide-open courtyard serves as the opening scene in the Disneyland story. It also serves as the hub for Main Street. Here at Town Square visitors enter and leave Disneyland, can jump on any of the four Main Street Vehicles, ask for information at City Hall, or visit the Opera House (showcasing "The Walt Disney Story featuring Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln").

In the Middle of Town Square is the Disneyland Flagpole. Each night at dusk a marine guard retrieves the flag from the flagpole in a very what is known as the "Flag Retreat Ceremony".

Bought by Disneyland for only 5 bucks, the concrete base of the flagpole’s previous career as a street lamp base was ended after being hit by a car.

At the foot of the base is the dedication plaque for Disneyland. On July 17, 1955 Walt Disney stood up to a podium and read this dedication for Disneyland:

"To all who come to this happy place, welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here, age relives fond memories of the past, and here, youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created America, with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to the world."

None of the street corners around Town Square, or Main Street itself are right angles. Walt thought that right-angled corners gave off more of an intimidating feeling than rounded ones. And originally, none of the grassy areas and planters had the iron railing it does now.
