Stories by Lindsey Galloway
I really miss the Royal Street Bachelors - the trio that plays in N.O. The musicians that were there during my time were Herb, Harold and Jack. The last time I spoke with Herb (who plays the bass), Jack was in a nursing home and Harold had passed away many years ago. When I had my last day at Disneyland, after 17 years, they came into the Cafe's sandwich room to serenade me - I have some neat pix of that too. I swear, I cried all day long. - "are you ready to order,?" sniff...sniff. Probably some of my most memorable times were the canoe races. I was on the winning women's team all 3 years at the French Market (1967-1969) and our record still stands ! 4.24 minutes ! I moved to the Creole in 1970 and started a team up there. We won 5 times between 1970 and 1977 - a lot of work, but a lot of fun. I remember a lot of celebrities: seeing Bobby Kennedy walk by the Cafe 3 days before he was assassinated, Emperor Hirohito (a really big deal back then), Gov. George Wallace, before he was shot and crippled - they had to bring him in before the park opened, because of the racial tensions back then in the 60's. I waited on a lot of really nice people. Probably my favorite was Donny Osmond, when he was only 18. He was with a party of 10 and his older brother Jay, but he was the poised and charming one of the rowdy group. I think I embarrassed the Cafe when I asked if he really wore purple socks and he put his foot up on the chair and said "of course"! I'll have to tell you about our encounter with John Travolta at the Cafe - pre-Saturday Night Fever - but, it's too long to write here. One last cute thing. It wasn't my table, but one of the waitresses had a great party of 6 or 7 on her station. They (the guests and the waitress) had so much fun, that when the guests exited the Cafe, they formed a small group in front of the restaurant and sang "Happy Trails to You" to their waitress. It was really sweet.
