Photography at Nemo - an Equity problem

There's a good thread in MiceChat about why photography at the Nemo musical is not allowed, when photos (even flash) are allowed at the Lion King show. Apparently, the Nemo musical has a special contract with the actors union, Equity, that stipulates no photos. So this is not Disney's rule, but Equity's. Due to the Broadway-like nature of this show, one assumes.

Well, I don't care whose rule it is. It's a stupid rule and Disney should never have agreed. These are tourists on vacation, and they want to take photos. The no flash rule is fine, but anything else is patently ridiculous. I know it's Broadway-like, but hey, THIS ISN'T NEW YORK. It's Disney World, and these people are on vacation.

I agree. I'm half of the mind to organize a protest of some sort. There are equity performers in all sorts of shows (Hunchback of Notre Dame springs to mind) and we were never prohibited from taking photos.

I haven't seen the show, but it could be of safety concerns too. Especially from Flashes.
Flashes in low-light levels completely blind actors and you can get hurt.
I worked in a stage show similar to the Mermaid show at MGM and every now and then we would have someone take flash pics. After one of the cast fell off the stage and broke her leg because of being blinded, we would completely stop the show until an usher would find the idiot taking the pics. We hated doing it, but we also hated broken legs.

Next step: Photos will be taken only by Disney PhotoPass photographers. Get your PhotoPass swiped on the way out to add these photos to your account (actually not a bad idea if you were getting the $99 CD deal anyway - the quality of the photos would likely be superior). I agree that there's little sense in banning non-flash photography, but guests don't typically have "little" sense - they have none, and don't know how to turn the flash off. The ban could well just be for safety, which Equity is *supposed* be concerned with.

And, BTW, people go on vacation to NYC, too. Just because you'er on vacation doesn't mean you have a built-in right to take photos. Yeah, WDW's a very photogenic place, but "no photos" is becoming a standard for performance venues everywhere - it's routine in Las Vegas, where people also vacation - so why exactly should WDW be different in this regard?
