Tusker House converting to buffet
In August, DAK's counter service Tusker House will close. When it reopens in November, it will be a character meal buffet.
WHY? fans are screaming everywhere. I'll tell you why: this is yet another curse of the Dining Plan. You see, in late summer 2007, the Yak and Yeti will open up, featuring both CS and TS. Aha, people will exult. finally a sit down restaurant in DAK!!! But their excitement will be short lived. What do you mean, this doesn't accept my Disney Dining Plan (it's run by an outside company). They will be peeved.
Knowing this, Disney World is making plans now to create a TS in DAK that *will* be on the DDP. They looked around and saw they couldn't convert Restaurantosaurus, due to the contract with McDonald's. Flame Tree is outdoor only; that won't do for a buffet and TS. So they decided to chop up Tusker House.
Of course it's a mistake. They should have gone after Pizzafari, another indoor restaurant that has lots of seating. Losing that wouldn't be a crime, since the menu is so bland. But losing Tusker House is a major problem.
Blame the Dining Plan.

Oh, now that is a shame. From opening day to last january I had never once eaten in a restaurant in DAK. I only tend to eat about once a day anyway and without a TS I never wanted to substiture some quickie CS food for something that would be really good later.
But on the last visit we were trapped by the afternoon parade (the route was designed by KSafari CMs looking to quit early, right?) and kinda hungry so we stopped at Tusker house. I was plesently suprosed. the chicken and the salad we had was really not bad at all. Finding a seat was impossible, and the tables were not cleaned regularly enough, but I can blame that on the parade. In any case, I was looking forward to having an In-park place to eat.
I never do the dining plan (the afore mentioned one meal/day and fancy dining taste means we don;t fit well in it) so the outside contractor thing does not bother me for that reason, it's just that the outside contractors so rarely do a good job. Wolfgang puck and the Columbia seem to be the only exceptions. DAK already had an outsider TS restaurant - Rainforest Cafe.

I've heard that the Character meal is only going to be for breakfast and that lunch and dinner will just be a buffet (Restaurantasaurus will lose the character breakfast as soon as the new Tusker House opens). The problem is that this now will mean you need an Advanced Dining Reservation to eat at Tusker House leaving no choices in that area of the park for quick service. One more thing you have to plan before entering the park.
Yin and Yak will also have a quick service window. So you're not losing a quick service location, so much as gaining a buffet.
Meh. I agree that the Dining Plan is having a lot of probably-unintended effects. Kevin pointed out some time ago that a certain number of tables should be held for same-week reservations, and I agree that's a sensible solution to the problem.
