UltimateOrlando Challenge
The UltimateOrlando Challenge is an in-person game open to everyone, played at regular intervals in the Orlando theme parks (usually Disney). Think of it as a combination puzzle-solving game, a scavenger hunt, an "eye spy", a road rally, and a (mild) trivia contest.
We are often asked what the Challenge looks like, so we include here a complete presentation of the very first Challenge. Think of this one as a model for the others, though the exact tricks and turns will be different for every new event.
Ultimate Orlando Challenge #1 (DAK)
“Discovering Discovery Island”
Sunday, May 15, 2005
The Event
The event consists of several parts. There’s a Starter Challenge for no points—think of this as a “mixer” so that everyone can meet everyone else. When you finish your Starter Challenge, you get the packet with the rest of the Challenges.
Most of your time will be spent doing the Expedition Challenges. There are six Expeditions. Usually these involve some puzzle or code given to you; when you decipher it, it will send you someplace in the Park to find a specific answer. All Expeditions have all-or-nothing scoring. But they are worth so many points you’ll want to be sure you leave enough time for them.
As you walk around solving the Expeditions, you should fill out the Trivia Challenge; this can be done at any point. Likewise, the Explorer Challenge should be done as you walk around. These are “eye-spy” type identifications, and note that there is not necessarily only one Explorer picture at each location; some locations may have more than one (and others none)!
Rules
1. Timed Event: The Ultimate Orlando Challenge is a timed event.
You have three hours to complete several Challenges, all of which are contained
in a single packet.
2. No separating! Teammates are only allowed to separate at restrooms; otherwise,
you must remain together at all times.
3. You will have to enter buildings to complete the Challenge. Not all answers
can be found outside of buildings.
4. Packets must be turned in stapled. No pages may be missing or torn out from
the packet, or it will not be scored.
5. Winners are the teams with the most points. In the event of a tie, the team
who turned in the packet first will win.
6. Teams must stay within Discovery Island. You may not cross a bridge to the
Oasis, Camp Mickey/Minnie, Africa, Asia, or Dinoland. However, you might need
to go right up to those bridges.
7. Find Kevin at the Flame Tree BBQ patio if you have questions. I will remain
there during the entire event. You may always ask a question, and I will tell
you if answering the question involves a five-point penalty, or if the answer
is “free.” Asking is always free.
8. Packets are due at 4:00 at the Flame Tree BBQ patio. Packets turned in late
will be docked ten points for every minute. It pays to be early! Note that there
is a 4:00 parade scheduled. In your shoes I would leave plenty of time to return
to Flame Tree.

Expedition #1: Name That Room! (100 pts)
Popular legend holds that these “pies” came from Italy, where peasants would put all their leftovers onto one dish of dough and bake it together. Head to the relevant restaurant and guess the correct names to each room. One of the rooms is done for you already. Or maybe ask someone? If you do, be sure you double-check to make sure that person knows what s/he is talking about! Note: This Expedition is “all or nothing” scoring, so be sure of each answer! Ignore the numbers in parentheses until the double-check.

Bonus: What single animal in room #2 is different from all the rest? (five-point
bonus)
Double-check: The numbers in parentheses refer to letters in
that word. “5” would be the fifth letter. Unscramble them –
it should form the word “Lentil”
Expedition #2: It’s Tough to be Truthful (100 pts)
Write down TRUE or FALSE for each of these statements. These can be answered “in order” – no need to memorize questions ahead of time! You may want to use a small light (perhaps the glow of a cell phone or a light-up wristwatch?) to help you read in the dark. If you don’t have access to a light at all, you may want to memorize questions after all.
1. Flik says they’ve been doing this act for over 400 million years
2. The tarantula has four eyes
3. The stinkbug is the performer after the tarantula.
4. Flik says to the termite: “they are not intruders, they are my friends!”
5. Hopper’s first word in the show is “What”
6. Hopper’s “evidence” includes a flyer that says “Knock
‘em Dead Exterminators”
7. The audience is sprayed with a product called “Bug Doom”
8. The black widow spiders’ eyes are red
9. There are eight honeybees at the start of the finale.
10. Flik’s last word of the show is “things.”
How many times did you answer “TRUE”?
Answer: _______________________
Expedition #3: Scrambled Latin (100 pts)
As you travel the Island today, watch for the signs about the animal exhibits. You’re particularly interested in the Latin names of the animals. Fill them in here as indicated, for the moment ignoring that some letters are highlighted:
Now write down all the letters above which were written into boxes:
_____________________________________________________
Unscramble those letters for your final one-word answer:
Answer: _______________________
Expedition #4: Crazy Code (100 pts)
STEP TWO: On scratch paper, write out the alphabet vertically, with A on the top and Z at the bottom. In the next column, do it backwards, with Z at the top and A at the bottom. Draw lines connecting letters horizontally. For instance, what used to be “B” will now look like “Y” and so on. Use this second column to read the code. Note that there are no spaces between the words, and the grammar is just this side of awkward, to help confuse you further!
Final Answer: _______________________
Expedition #5: Hidden Walkway (100 pts)
In your travels around the island today, look for a path that goes literally nowhere. It has no destination (it’s a dead-end, and does not lead to a Cast Member doorway), and you’re hemmed in by foliage pretty thickly. It’s also not a very long walkway, but it is pretty straight!
Go to the dead end of this mystery walkway, and find the Tree of Life from this vantage point. Take ten big steps toward the Tree. What mammal is directly in front of you?
Answer: _______________________
Expedition #6: Sea Life at DAK?! (100 pts)
What animal is next on this list:
squid, trilobyte, crab, shrimp
You’ll know it when you see it. If you can find it, that is!
Answer: _______________________

Explorer Challenge (20 pts each)
Describe where to find each of the following pictures. For most of them, the
only way to find them is to explore the entire area covered by today’s
Challenge, and look in all the corners.
If the image is found somewhere in a shop or restaurant, it’s enough to simply state the name of the shop or restaurant. Otherwise, you’ll want to get a bit more specific, to make apparent you really know where it is.
