After a cursory wait of a few minutes, we were ushered inside and brought to a table. While drink orders came quickly, the drinks themselves took much longer. For that matter, refills were slow in coming, and plates piled up before being removed; this was really the only downside to our visit. Despite the lackluster service - or dare I say because of it - the gratuity of 18% was automatically added. Our party was five adults and two children; was this really necessary? Perhaps they do it whenever the Disney Dining Experience discount card is used? But I've not seen it elsewhere. Perhaps it's part of character meals, then.
The food is comfort food; hearty American breakfast food like you're used to: bacon, eggs, sausage, pancakes (including chocolate chip ones for the kids), hash browns, potatoes, grits, frittata, waffles, biscuits, and so on. There's fruit, yogurt, cottage cheese and multiple kinds of bread. There's oatmeal and there's even cold cereal, if you should want that. At $23 per adult, few people seemed to want the cold food.
But while the food was excellent, if heavy, what makes this restaurant is its atmosphere. We had JoJo and Goliath, and June and Leo roam the tables. They visited each table for more than a few moments, really spending time and interacting with the kids. This was a marked contrast to the princess dining we'd had just a day earlier in Norway, where they seemed rushed.
On top of the meet and greets, every thirty minutes there was a show of sorts. Two live (human) performers would come out and lead the room singing songs from the Disney TV lineup, like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse or Hot Dog or Handy Manny. They'd encourage everyone to dance along, and little kids did so enthusiastically. We even formed a congo line at one point. Even in those moments when there are no characters at your table and no event going on, the room is festive, thanks to the piped in music from acts like the Wiggles.
It's a fun time at Play 'n Dine, and we will definitely be back.
