The strawberry banana smoothie ($4) is a great start, with nothing but authentic fruit in it. It tasted much more heavily of banana than of strawberry, and wasn't too thick. The pot stockers ($7) were made of duck, which changes the entire character of a pot sticker, and frankly made it a bit greasy. It came with sunomono cucumbers and a heavy white cream sauce rather than the usual ponzu sauce. The crab cakes ($10) tasted great, but the three cakes were so tiny that one still felt a bit ripped off. The seafood chowder ($6), however, was worth twice that price. Delicious, rich, and inviting, it was dominated by the shrimp flavor, though scallops and cheese contributed heavily to the complex taste.
We found mixed success with the main courses. The vegan noodles ($11) were merely a stir-fry that relied heavily on soy sauce for flavoring, which is hardly exotic, and tasted rather oily. The veggies provided a welcome crunch at every bite, at least. The mahi mahi ($13) tasted like it had been grilled in oak, and provided an excellent subtle flavor through one very thick filet. It came with ponzu sauce, with was also good with the plantains on the plate. The standout side dish, oddly, was a macaroni salad heavy on both mayonnaise and pepper that tasted much better than you'd imagine.
We had fast, friendly service that sagely pointed me in the direction of the imported beers from the islands - the pale ale ($5) is especially to be recommended. The server checked on us with regularity and found the right balance between visiting too often and not enough.
The atmosphere at our visit was just fine; it was not overcrowded and there was no wait, and as a result, there wasn't too much noise. That may well be different in the evening hours, when the craziness and shouting from 'Ohana's probably infiltrates this little cafe too. But during the day, the vibe feels lazy, underscored by propeller fans turning slowly overhead. It's not a complete immersion or transportation to another world in here, but neither does it need to be.
