Often uncrowded and certainly a bargain compared to the other restaurants in the area, the Mara can be fairly described as a themed cafeteria.

The African stew ($8) came served in a sourdough breadbowl, with a generous portion of curry-infused meat and vegetables. It was both exotic and familiar. Best of all, the bread was sort and fresh, and the bread was lean and tender. The same curry flavor dominated the half-chicken ($10), which was rotisserie cooked to soft and juicy perfection. Expect a healthy dose of tumeric in the spice.

The falafel pita ($5) was small, but its low price fully compensated, and the morsel was tasty, with a spicy cucumber sauce to comliment it. The cold cous cous salad which accompanied it, augmented by corn and pimentos, offered a perfect counter-balance. Our child, instead of a child's meal, opted for apple juice ($2), apple slices and caramel ($3.50), and a few bites of watermelon ($3).

But the crown jewels here are the famous zebra dome desserts ($4). These famous pastries are better known from Boma, but a set of five at Mara is reasonably priced. They contain alcohol in minute traces, but the flavor doesn't dominate.

Service was a touch slow, especially for the falafel, which appeared to be prepared fresh, creating some significant delays. Cashiers were mostly attentive, though there was nothing remarkable.

Atmosphere, though, was top-notch. The dining area is roomy, often uncrowded, and there is even a modicum of theming to the ceiling and walls. But a primary attraction here is the television in the corner, looping classic Disney cartoons and enthralling kids. An hour is easy to pass here, particularly with children in your party.
